Gregg Berhalter, USMNT staff scouting MLS action this weekend

Gregg Berhalter is about to be back in Columbus with Crew SC. Well, he’ll be there at least.

The US national team boss is taking his scouting tour from Germany to America, as Berhalter and his staff will be attending various matches around MLS this weekend to scout, per a U.S. Soccer spokesperson. Berhalter will be on hand at MAPFRE Stadium as the Crew host the New York Red Bulls (4:30 pm ET | MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in US and DAZN in Canada) with a number of USMNT-eligible players.

Gyasi Zardes, Wil Trapp and Zack Steffen are likely to line up for Columbus while Aaron Long and Tim Parker may or may not feature for the Red Bulls, with the match sandwiched between midweek Concacaf Champions League matches. The Red Bulls advanced over Atletico Pantoja and will face Santos Laguna next week.

Berhalter’s staff will be attending various matches across the league this weekend as well. On Saturday, coaches will be at Philadelphia UnionToronto FC (1pm ET | MLS Live on ESPN+ in the U.S. and TSN1/4 in Canada), Seattle SoundersFC Cincinnati (10pm ET | FS1, Fox Deportes, TSN) then D.C. UnitedAtlanta United on Sunday (6pm ET | ESPN, ESPN Deportes, TSN).

Last week, Berhalter was in person in Germany to watch Americans in action in Schalke 04-Manchester City, Werder Bremen-VfB Stuttgart, Borussia Monchengladbach-VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund-Bayer Leverkusen.

“I think every player has their own individual pathway that they follow,” Berhalter said in Germany last weekend to Werder.TV. “For some players, MLS is a great league to start with, other players it means coming to Germany and other players arrive in England. There’s no one answer for all the players. What I know is there are good leagues around the world, including Major League Soccer.”

Berhalter will soon name his squad for March friendlies against Ecuador and Chile.
