Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has signed a new contract at the club until 2022.
Simeone’s previous deal ran until June 30, 2020 and was agreed in September 2017. The 48-year-old said at that time that his decision to sign had been based on the team keeping hold of stars including Antoine Griezmann, Koke and Saul Niguez.
The Argentine has been Atletico manager for almost eight years, which makes him the longest serving coach in La Liga. He has won eight trophies including the 2013-14 La Liga title, 2013 Copa del Rey and the Europa League in 2012 and 2018.
Atletico are third in the La Liga table, seven points behind leaders Barcelona and one behind Real Madrid having lost 3-1 in the derbi earlier this month.
Simeone has been named La Liga’s coach of the year three times, but he has never won the Champions League and has finished as a runner-up twice — losing to Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016
