Champions League Will be used in knockout rounds
Next Tuesday VAR will debut in the Champions League and for this reason UEFA have assembled the 16 teams who will participate in the first knockout round of the competition to try to explain how and when the technology will be used in order to avoid confusion.
In each stadium where matches are played, a mobile unit will provide coverage in the absence of a VAR centre and a referee, along with two video operators, will be located at each stadium to support the match official.
All appointed members must have a VAR license and operate it in their respective countries, something that Spain’s ten international referees do.
Emiliano Butragueno was the Real Madrid representative sent to Frankfurt.
Roberto Rosetti, UEFA‘s refereeing officer, explained that VAR will look for clear and obvious errors related to goals, penalties, straight red cards and mistaken identity.
“It’s very important to explain how VAR will be used and how we have prepared the referees,” Rosetti said.
“It is essential that everyone understands when it can intervene, but that they also understand when it doesn’t intervene.”
VAR will also be used in the UEFA Europa League final, the Nations League final and the final of the Under-21 European Championship which will be held next June.
