Leicester City transfer news: Youri Tielemans joins on loan from Monaco

The 21-year-old Belgium international makes the move to the Premier League for the remainder of the season while Adrien Silva moves the other way

Leicester City have announced the signing of Belgium international Youri Tielemans on loan for the remainder of the 2018-19 season, with Adrien Silva heading the other way to the Ligue 1 side for the rest of the current campaign.

“I’m really excited to get going,” Tielemans told LCFC TV. “The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and when I was young, I always watched Premier League games. I’m really happy to be here and I’m excited to get started.

“It’s a big family. Everybody is really kind and really good with me. I think it will be really good here.”

The 21-year-old will be looking to get his career back on track, having looked so promising when he made the move to the principality club from Anderlecht in the summer of 2017.

Breaking into Anderlecht’s first team at age 16, he enjoyed a quick rise as one of Europe’s finest prospects, scoring six goals in both 2014-15 and 2015-16, before capping his time in the Belgian top flight with 13 strikes in the 2016-17 league season.

A move to Monaco followed, fresh off the club capturing the Ligue 1 title, but Tielemans was unable to reach the same heights in his first year at the club.

He did not find the back of the net last season in the French top tier in 27 appearances with his only goal coming in the Champions League.

However, he has shown signs of tapping into that potential which made him a sought-after talent just a few years ago, as he has notched five goals and an assist this season for Monaco despite the club’s woes which see them second from the bottom in Ligue 1 and three points away from safety.

The youngster also played his way into the Belgium national team, making four appearances and two starts at the 2018 World Cup in a campaign that saw the Red Devils finish third.

He also started all four of Belgium’s Nations League matches this past autumn.

Tielemans will now look to continue that growth with a Leicester club that sit in 11th place but just three points off seventh after snatching a point at Anfield against league-leading Liverpool on Wednesday.

Going the other way is Silva, who was at the centre of a dispute in the summer of 2017 over his initial transfer from Portuguese club Sporting to Leicester.

The documents relating to Silva’s transfer to the Premier League side arrived moments after the window closed and Silva was unable to be registered by the club until the January 2018 window.

After 12 Premier League appearances last season, tallying an assist, Silva has made just a pair of league appearances this season under Claude Puel.
