The New England Revolution take another step forward in their 2019 preparations early Thursday morning with their opening match of preseason, taking on Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenua FC on the Mediterranean coast of southern Spain.
New England Revolution
The Revs are about as far from the usual Stateside MLS preseason locales as you can get, having selected Marbella, a favorite winter camp destination for clubs across Europe and beyond, for the opening phase of their ramp-up to opening day.
Brad Friedel and his squad arrived in Spain on Saturday and will spend two weeks there. In addition to Shenhua, New England will scrimmage Czech outfit FC Viktoria Plzen, Russia’s FC Krasnodar and Ukrainian heavyweights Dynamo Kyiv in the days ahead.
Shanghai Shenua FC
Owned by Chinese corporation Greenland Group, Shenhua are one of the bigger clubs in the CSL, though they’re suffering from a decades-long league title drought. Coached by Spaniard Quique Sanchez Flores, their roster includes pricey imports Oscar Romero, Fredy Guarin and former Seattle Sounder Obafemi Martins.
