LAFC sign defender Walker Zimmerman to new four-year deal

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Re-signed

LAFC announced on Tuesday they have signed defender Walker Zimmerman to a new four-year contract using Targeted Allocation Money.

The center back, acquired in a trade from FC Dallas ahead of LAFC’s debut campaign last year, was officially out of contract at the end of 2018. But the player told reporters at the US national team training camp last week that he was “hopeful” of returning to LAFC.

Shortly before the news broke, Zimmerman hinted that the deal was done on his Twitter page.

“Walker has emerged as one of the top center backs in MLS, and we are incredibly pleased to agree to a new, long-term deal that will keep him in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future,” said general manager and EVP of soccer operations John Thorrington in a team statement. “He is entering the prime years of his career, and I know I share our supporters’ excitement in looking forward to his continued contributions in Black & Gold for years to come.”

Zimmerman, 25, made 26 appearances in MLS regular season play last season for LAFC, scoring four goals and an assist. He is expected to anchor the club’s defense for the foreseeable future. LAFC open the 2019 MLS regular season on March 3 at home against Sporting KC.
