Major UEFA Champions League rule change will see Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur benefit

English clubs are set to benefit from a Champions League rule change.

UEFA have opted to scrap a rule that saw Philippe Coutinho unable to play for Barcelona in the competition last season following his move from Liverpool.

The governing body has changed the rule meaning players who move clubs in January are now no longer cup tied.

UEFA’s decision comes after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was unable to play for Arsenal in the Europa League last season following his move from Borussia Dortmund.

Clubs in the last 16 of Europe are now able to register players without any restrictions for the first time.

That means clubs can plot their January business to have maximum impact across all competitions.

However, how long Liverpool and Manchester United stay in the competition for remains to be seen, with both being handed tough draws in the last 16.

Liverpool have been handed a tie against Bayern Munich whilst United face PSG.

Tottenham Hotspur take on Dortmund and Manchester City have been drawn against Schalke.

The games take place on the weeks of February 12, February 19, March 6 and March 13.
