Salah snubbed as Uefa confirm Team of the Year

Uefa have confirmed their 2018 Team of the Year as voted for by football fans, and there is no room for Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.

Salah enjoyed a stellar 2018, helping Liverpool reach the Champions League final, as well was winning the Premier League Golden Boot and Player of the Year.

Did Salah deserve a place in the Uefa Team of the Year? Five key things to know…

  1. Salah scored 37 goals for Liverpool across all competitions in 2018, more than Hazard (18) and Mbappe (25) but fewer than Messi (47) and Ronaldo (43).
  2. The Egyptian won the Premier League Golden Boot for the 2017/18 season and reached the Champions League final with Liverpool.
  3. However, Salah injured his shoulder in the final and struggled for fitness at the World Cup, where he scored just one goal.
  4. He subsequently endured a difficult start to the new Premier League campaign but, midway through January, he has already scored 13 league goals this term.
  5. Hazard has scored 10 league goals this season; Mbappe has 13, Messi has 16 and Ronaldo has 14.

However it was not enough for the Egyptian to earn Uefa’s plaudits as he missed out to Eden Hazard, Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the attacking positions.

Uefa announced their Team of the Year on Friday. The back four is comprised of Sergio Ramos, Salah’s Liverpool team-mate Virgil van Dijk, Raphael Varane and Marcelo, sitting in front of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

N’Golo Kante and Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric make up the midfield behind the aforementioned attacking quadrant.

Modric received the most votes of any player in the team, with 115,440 of the voting fans selecting the Croatian in their teams. Meanwhile, Ter Stegen received the fewest votes of those included in the XI, with 51,307.

A total of 168,543 users cast a vote, with the total number of votes adding up to 1,153,973.

Fans confused by Salah omission

Despite the fact the team was voted for by supporters from around the world on Uefa’s website, many fans were somewhat confused by the results.

Many thought Salah deserved a place in the XI ahead of either Hazard or Mbappe.
