Willie Collum only Scottish referee selected to be part of UEFA’s elite group of VAR officials

WILLIE COLLUM is the only Scottish referee to be handpicked by UEFA to be part of their elite group of VAR officials following its introduction in Europe for the knock-out rounds.

European football’s governing body will use video assistant referees in the latter phases of the Champions League and Europa League from next month onwards.

Collum is the only Scot selected by UEFA

And Collum is the only Scot from 24 top officials in Europe that will be part of UEFA’s first VAR team for the matches.

Collum has had a season even more controversial than usual after Rangers were hit with five SFA charges after they claimed there were ‘underlying issues’ regarding him following the official’s second yellow to Daniel Candeias in a match against St Mirren.

But he is regarded as one of UEFA’s top officials after enjoying a good Euro 2016 tournament.

He’s been in charge of a total of 24 Champions League matches in his career, including four this season already.

Collum will be joined by English ref Anthony Taylor and 22 others for a course to be run by UEFA later this month as part of their final preparations for the VAR system.

The VAR officials will be situated in the vicinity of the stadium where the game is being played, which is different from the World Cup where the officials were housed in a control room in Moscow.
