Nike have unveiled a special ‘”Shirtholder’s edition” Chelsea shirt to commemorate the club’s 2012 Champions League triumph — and it’s fair to say that it has not been well received.
The shirt, which was designed in consultation with supporters who bought the club’s light blue third kit, is being marketed as the first-ever fan jersey designed by fans.
It features a heavily textured blue and purple pattern punctuated by two bold orange horizontal hoops, while “19/05” is included in large white font at the base of the back — referencing the date on which Chelsea overcame Bayern Munich in a dramatic penalty shootout at the Allianz Arena to become Kings of Europe.
Nike claim the shirt “tells the story of Chelsea’s greatest victory: The Miracle of Munich”, but the design was greeted with considerable scorn by Blues fans on social media.
Posting images of the shirt from the front and back on Twitter, one user said: “Wait a minute… the Chelsea fan jersey that fans voted for is… HORRIBLE?!?!?”

Another replied: “Looks like a sweater that grandma makes for their grandchildren.”
The shirt, which is expected to be priced at £80, will never be worn by the first team — something you suspect the likes of Eden Hazard and David Luiz will be very relieved about.
