Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi recently surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for scoring most UEFA Champions League (UCL) goals for one club after netting the opener for Barcelona in the UCL match against PSV Eindhoven. Now, the Argentinian forward has said that he is delighted with his new stat. Barcelona won 2-1 against PSV as Messi and Gerard Pique scored the goals for the Blaugrana. It was Messi who assisted Pique’s goal, however, the Catalan maestro has said that he didn’t mean to assist Pique and they were lucky to score off his free kick.

After rattling the net for the first goal against PSV, Messi surpassed Ronaldo’s 105 goals, that he scored for his former club Real Madrid. The 31-year-old now has 106 Champions League goals to his name and also the most goals for a single club.

“I am delighted, I have just found out now. I am happy for this new stat,” Messi told the Barcelona’s official website.

Meanwhile, Messi also said that they didn’t plan anything for Pique’s goal and added that the Spaniard was fortunate to see the ball coming in before putting it in the back of the net.

“The free-kick didn’t come off but Gerard was in the area and he saw it and fortunately it went in but it was not something we had planned,” he said.

Messi has enjoyed a brilliant start to his 2018-19 campaign and has the most goals in the UCL so far. He has scored six goals so far in five Champions League games while assisting once. The Argentinian also has nine goals and six assists so far in La Liga for the Spanish giants. Meanwhile, Ronaldo has also enjoyed a roaring start to his life for his new club Juventus since joining from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. Juventus currently sits top of the Serie A table having lost just one match so far.
