TRANSFER TRACKER: Roster Update
D.C. United announced on Wednesday they have picked up the 2019 contract options of attacker Luciano Acosta and defender Jalen Robinson.
Acosta is the talented Argentine who really blossomed following the midseason arrival of Wayne Rooney. In 2018, Acosta scored 10 goals and 17 assists in MLS regular season play, and was a 2018 MLS Best XI selection, as D.C. surged to an Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs berth.
Meanwhile, the club did not exercise options on Yamil Asad, Nick DeLeon, Vytautas “Vytas” Andriuskevicius, Kevin Ellis, Ian Harkes, Jared Jeffrey, Dane Kelly, Bruno Miranda and Kofi Opare.
Darren Mattocks, Oniel Fisher and Travis Worra are out of contract, while Taylor Kemp announced his retirement.
Mattocks was D.C. United’s joint second-highest scorer in 2018, with 10 goals, but a report from The Washington Post’s Steven Goff on Wednesday indicated the Jamaican international would be pursuing opportunities elsewhere to find more playing time.
The team’s statement indicates several players whose options were declined or who are out of contract are in negotiations with D.C. United to return, including Asad, whose current loan from Argentine club Velez Sarsfield formally ends but whose MLS rights are retained by United.
