France boss Didier Deschamps was happy that his side ended a memorable 2018 with their 1-0 win over Uruguay, whose coach Oscar Tabarez was philosophical after his side clock a fourth-straight defeat.

Didier Deschamps (France coach): “It was good to end the year with a win and also to show some improvement in our play, despite a number of changes, like the inclusion of [Ferland] Mendy and [Tanguy] Ndombele in the starting line-up. Collectively, we did well against a solid Uruguay side. We were vigilant. It’s always good to bounce back, and even more so in this case after a non-performance on Friday [in the 2-0 UEFA Nations League defeat to the Netherlands]. We didn’t concede too many chances. We finished 2018 on a positive note, and it will remain a great year in French football. A lot of teams would have loved to experience what we did in July.”
Oscar Tabarez (Uruguay coach): “Our opponents were better than us in the first 15, 20 minutes, during which time they created several chances, but after that, the match was very balanced. We’re not leaving here empty-handed, even though we have to correct a few things. It’s no fun losing four matches in a row but, generally speaking, you learn more from defeats than you do from victories.”
