Atlanta United midfielder Darlington Nagbe and Columbus Crew SC goalkeeper Zack Steffen were forced to withdraw from the US men’s national team for upcoming international friendly matches against England and Italy due to injuries, U.S. Soccer announced Monday afternoon.
Nagbe was diagnosed with a low-grade hamstring strain following Atlanta United’s 3-1 win over New York City FC in the second leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Nagbe played all but one minute on Sunday, replaced late by Kevin Kratz.
Steffen aggravated a right hamstring issue that first occurred after the USMNT lost to Colombia, 4-2, in Tampa last month. The 2018 Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year played the entire 90 minutes in a 3-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls in the second leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals Sunday at Red Bull Arena.
Replacing Steffen on a squad reduced to 27 players ahead of Thursday’s match against England (3 pm ET | ESPN2, UniMás, Univision Deportes) is Hertha Berlin goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann.
The son of former USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann, Jonathan competed for the US at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup and has earned his first call-up for the senior national team.
