Uefa want to move Champions League games to the weekend and play Premier League midweek

UEFA are considering switching Champions League matches to be played at the weekend, according to reports.

It is understood, though, that the four major European leagues – in England, Spain, Germany and Italy, will block the move and have already signed an agreement against it.

But according to AS, Uefa want to hold their elite competition’s matches on Saturdays and Sundays, forcing Premier League and other top leagues to be played midweek.

Currently the only Champions League match to take place at the weekend is the final.

Up until the 2009 final in Rome between Barcelona and Manchester United, the final was held on a Wednesday night.

But since then the game has been staged on a Saturday night.

But the Europa League final is still played midweek, while the Super Cup final between the Champions League and Europa League winners took place on a Wednesday this year.

The reports come as Uefa begin to make plans to prevent a breakaway European Super League coming to fruition.

Fifa have already said they will ban from their tournaments, including the World Cup, any players who compete in such a league.

Gianni Infantino, the organisation’s president, said: “You are either in or you are out.

“If there are players who don’t play organised football then that encompasses everything – national leagues, confederation competitions, the Euros and the World Cup.

“We have seen for many years these attempts to break away outside of the structures, going back to the 1990s.

“It is up to us to protect football and come up with solutions that benefit clubs and also the world football community.”
