Irish FA launch bid to host 2021 UEFA Super Cup at Windsor Park

The Irish FA have formally submitted a bid to host the 2021 UEFA Super Cup at Windsor Park.

Four nations have staked their claim to hold the annual match between the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League. Windsor Park’s opposition comes from Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium, the Dinamo Stadium in Belarus and the Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv, Ukraine

The Irish FA had also attempted to land the 2019 Super Cup but lost out to the Vodafone Park in Istanbul – Besiktas’ home ground.

Windsor Park has a capacity of 18,614 and could hold a significantly larger number of spectators than attended the 2018 Super Cup. A reported crowd of 12,424 travelled to Tallinn’s A. Le Coq Arena to see Atletico Madrid beat city rivals Real 4-2.

The Vodafone Park has a capacity of over 40,000 while Porto’s Estádio do Dragão, which will host the 2020 Super Cup, can hold over 50,000 fans.

Windsor Park is the smallest of the four stadiums bidding to host the 2021 edition.

The Irish FA now has until February 15, 2019 to submit its final bid dossier.
