Bayern Munich victory over Wolfsburg boosted morale – Niklas Sule

Raf Honigstein breaks down how Bayern Munich’s press conference to confront media criticism turned into a disaster for the club.

Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovac insisted he will not change his approach despite the German giants’ recent poor run of form.

Niklas Sule has said Bayern Munich’s 3-1 win at VfL Wolfsburg was a much-needed confidence boost for the squad following a spell of four matches without a victory.

On Saturday, Bayern Munich, down to 10 players after Arjen Robben’s second yellow card early in the second half, beat VfL Wolfsburg to temporarily avoid more turbulence for the Bundesliga champions.

The win came just one day after Bayern’s leadership hit out at German media at a bizarre news conference. The club’s president Uli Hoeness and CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, citing the German constitution, warned media over their “disrespectful” reporting of the crisis with some pundits daring to call defenders Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels “old boys.”

While media reacted with astonishment, defender Joshua Kimmich on Saturday said the off-field episode sent a good signal to the squad.

And speaking to reporters at the pre-match news conference ahead of their Champions League clash with AEK Athens, Germany international Sule said that the win at Wolfsburg boosted the team’s morale.

“Friday wasn’t decisive, but rather Saturday and the points we picked up there,” Sule said. “The atmosphere in the dressing room is very good. And in any case better than in the two weeks before.”

“There’s always a certain unrest at Bayern if you don’t win in four consecutive games. You could see that in training. We dragged us out of it. We want to start a new winning streak against AEK now.”

Earlier on Monday, Bayern CEO Rummenigge said that there were “players who thanked us” for the news conference, and he explained the attacks on German media were meant as “a signal we have the team’s back.”

“It was clear that we’d receive a media echo like this. We hit out at media and media hit back,” Rummenigge said.
