TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report
After parting ways with their head coach last month and failing to qualify for the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs, it wouldn’t be a big surprise to see Vancouver Whitecaps FC retool their roster in the offseason.
According to a report from YashinQuesada.com out of Costa Rica, one player who may be on his way out is Kendall Waston, with the report stating that the Costa Rican international hopes to play elsewhere in MLS, or in Europe or Asia. Before the 2018 season, the ‘Caps signed him to a contract extension through at least the 2019 campaign, so Waston may be looking for a transfer, loan or trade.
He addressed his future in an interview with AS on Sunday, expressing some uncertainty about it.
“I’m here today, tomorrow I don’t know brother,” Waston said. “Honestly, I don’t know if I’m gonna be here next year, because even if I have a contract, nothing is guaranteed in life, except for death. The rest is uncertain.”
But on Wednesday, The Province’s J.J. Adams reported Waston said “I want to leave” after training, while the Whitecaps said they have no plans to trade or sell the defender.
The 30-year-old center back has been a regular starter for Vancouver since arriving in late 2014 but recently expressed his unhappiness over the dismissal of Carl Robinson with five games left in the season.
Playing under interim head coach Craig Dalrymple, the ’Caps were eliminated from playoff contention Sunday despite a come-from-behind 2-2 draw with LAFC. They close the 2018 season with a Decision Day presented by AT&T matchup against the Portland Timbers on Sunday (4:30 pm ET | TV & streaming info).
