Liverpool’s Champions League opponents, Red Star Belgrade, are expected to attract a large contingent of away fans when they play at Anfield next week, despite a Uefa ban on travelling support.
European football’s governing body has forbidden the Serbian club from selling tickets for the fixture. But despite being similarly prohibited when they met group rivals Paris St-Germain on Oct 3, over 1,000 supporters headed to the French capital.
Many of those supporters found their way into the Parc de Princes for the fixture to see their side’s 6-1 defeat.
That has alerted Merseyside Police who have vowed to oversee a comprehensive security operation in Liverpool city centre and Anfield for the group game on Oct 24.
Paul White, the match commander superintendent, said: “We are aware of the Uefa ban on Red Star Belgrade selling tickets for this fixture to their fans.
“We will have a comprehensive policing operation in place, working alongside both clubs and Serbian police, in preparation for this fixture to ensure spectators are kept safe and to smoothly facilitate the movements of those travelling to and from the game.
“There will be additional officers on duty at the ground and we will have a city centre policing plan in place throughout the day, to further ensure that spectators and visitors to the city are kept safe.”
