Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette has claimed the atmosphere in French stadiums is better than in English ones.
The Premier League is usually lauded by foreign players for the excitement generated by fans but Lacazette, who joined the Gunners from Lyon for nearly £47million in summer 2017, prefers the matchday experience in France.
Lacazette made no explicit reference to the atmosphere at Emirates Stadium, though Arsenal fans have been taunted by rivals in the past for a perceived lack of vocal support for their team.
The striker said: “I miss Ligue 1’s atmosphere. In England, the fans are more spectators than supporters. There’s a better atmosphere in French stadiums.”
Despite a promising start to the season with Arsenal, which has yielded five goals in 10 matches, Lacazette is currently unable to persuade France coach Didier Deschamps to pick him for the national side.
The 27-year-old was left out of the squad that won the World Cup in Russia last summer and was also overlooked for the latest round of matches, a friendly against Iceland and the Nations League fixture against Germany tonight.
Deschamps said: “There is competition for each position. The players who played at the World Cup are performing well.
“I need balance in the squad and he is a central striker. He must continue.”
