Asked about Kane’s mini-drought, Sterling said: “It’s one of those where, like myself because I haven’t scored for a while, you always wait for that moment and then sometimes the chances will come.
“You have to keep your positivity, keep getting into the box and you just have to keep being persistent. The goals will come, I’m sure of that.”
Sterling has been asked to play in a front two with Kane in recent months, but Southgate changed his formation to mirror that of City for the game against Croatia in a move designed to get more from his forwards.
And Sterling is hoping that he, Kane and Marcus Rashford are given the opportunity to start together in a front three again in Seville.
“I feel we had more freedom, we tried to mix it up as well because it wasn’t always to feet,” said Sterling. “We made some runs in behind and probably, on a better day and on a better pitch, we could have really caused them havoc.
“Having someone like Marcus alongside the front line is really helpful as well with his pace and ability on the ball. Hopefully, against Spain, we can make it work.”
Teenager Sancho will been keen for another run-out against Spain after impressing in his late cameo in Rijeka. He and Sterling know each other well from their days together at Manchester City, before the 18-year-old moved to Borussia Dortmund.
“He is a really good talent and someone I’ve thought highly of since the first time I saw him at Manchester City when he was training with us in pre-season,” said Sterling. “I thought highly of him, his work ethic and what he does with the ball. For someone so young to back themselves to go abroad is a credit to them.”
