Germany boss Joachim Loew has taken umbrage with Jurgen Klopp after he labelled the new UEFA Nations League format “senseless”.
The Liverpool boss criticised UEFA’s decision to replace the majority of friendly internationals with a new tournament, calling it “the most senseless competition in the world.”
Klopp did little to hide his disdain for the tournament, which he believes places a further competitive burden on players.
Last season’s Champions League finalists have seen 19 players jet off on international duty this week and Klopp has stated: “We have to begin to think of the players.”
However Loew says that from his perspective, the new competition is preferable to facing the likes of minnows Luxembourg and San Marino.

“The club coaches sometimes don’t like such international breaks,” said the Germany boss on Tuesday. “Because many players from Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Manchester City are away. Coaches then don’t have the possibility to train normally.”
“For us, for me as national coach, the Nations League is a good invention.
“Because we play against top nations, because it’s for something. It is a competition. That is sometimes preferable to me in this phase than to play against the really small countries.”
On Tuesday Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno was added to the 2014 World Cup winners’ squad, after Kevin Trapp pulled out of injured.
