Angers hand Monaco another Ligue 1 loss – Nine Wide World of Sports

Monaco have suffered another early-season setback as visitors Angers battled to a 1-0 win in their French Ligue 1 clash at Stade Louis II.

Stephane Bahoken’s first-half strike was enough to secure all three points for Angers and leave Leonardo Jardim’s Monaco with just one victory from seven matches and languishing in 16th spot.

Monaco finished second last season, but so far have failed to build any momentum and also saw their Champions League campaign open with a home defeat by Atletico Madrid.

Cameroon frontman Bahoken broke the deadlock on 27 minutes when he smashed in a cutback from Flavien Tait.

The points lifted Anger to ninth.

Monaco rarely threatened and their evening was summed up when a late penalty claim for handball was not given. After a lengthy on-field review the video assistant referee (VAR) was called into action to make the decision.

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, Patrick Vieira’s Nice ran out 2-1 winners at struggling Nantes.

Nice went ahead on 31 minutes through full-back Christophe Jallet, only for Emiliano Sala to equalise just before the hour.

However, Jean-Victor Makengo’s goal on 69 minutes proved enough for victory as Nice moved into the top half of the table.

Toulouse had a five-match unbeaten run end with a 3-2 home defeat by Saint-Etienne, who are now third.

Lois Diony put the visitors in front after 23 minutes but Max Gradel, facing his former club, scored a fine equaliser just after the hour.

Saint-Etienne were soon back in front through Remy Cabella before substitute Yannis Salibur increased the lead with 15 minutes left.

Jimmy Durmaz quickly gave Toulouse renewed hope with a curling effort on 78 minutes but the home side could not conjure a dramatic finale.
