The Uruguayan superstar hasn’t been at his very best in recent seasons, struggling in front of goal and it looks like Barcelona are finally set to sign a replacement.
Luis Suarez has been an incredible star, from his time at Ajax all the way to him being a part of arguably one of football’s greatest trios at Barcelona. However, for the La Liga giants, their front-man and number 9 is growing older and as a result isn’t able to perform at levels he laughed at earlier. However, that means that Barcelona need to find a potential replacement and it need not be a record signing.
The Catalan giants have been linked with moves for Antoine Griezmann, Timo Werner, Gabriel Jesus, Paulo Dybala and many others, but it seems like the club could go for someone younger and in great form, which is why they are looking at Ligue 1 star Nicolas Pepe. The 23-year-old has had a sensational start to his debut season with LOSC Lille, with four goals and three assists in his opening five games.
This would mean that at the moment, the 23-year-old is second in the Ligue 1 scoring charts behind only Marseille star Florian Thauvin, and sits ahead of the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Falcao, Edinson Cavani and many others. A splendid start to his season and something that nobody could have predicted, the versatile forward has the ability to play across the front-line and has used that ability very well.
However, to make things worse for LOSC Lille, it seems that Barcelona are very interested in signing the star, even sending scouts to watch him play. In an interview, Lille president Gerard Lopez has revealed “It is true,” Lopez said, referring to the reports of interest from Barcelona. “There are a few big clubs interested in him. Clubs contacted us directly after the transfer window to find out how to proceed. I wanted him to stay for at least one more season.”
Author’s take:
Nicolas Pepe is in great form at the moment but there is still the question if he continues scoring goals even in the depths of the season. LOSC Lille are going to face a battle this season and they’ll need goals from everyone and if the 23-year-old can keep his goalscoring form going, then maybe a move to a bigger side could be on the cards in the near future.
