Juan Carlos Osorio named new coach of Paraguay national team

Former Mexico national team and MLS coach Juan Carlos Osorio has a new job leading an international team. Just not the one some expected.

Osorio has been announced as the new coach of the Paraguay national team, a group that is ranked 30th in the current FIFA World Rankings but has not reached the World Cup since 2010. Back then, it was Atlanta United boss Tata Martino who led La Albirroja to their first-ever quarterfinals appearance

The move ends any speculation that Osorio, who has had MLS coaching stops in Chicago and New York, could be the next full-time coach of the US national team.

Osorio will still have ties to MLS in his new role. Atlanta’s Miguel Almiron has been a regular contributor to Paraguay’s full international team, and the New York Red BullsKaku Gamarra made his first-team debut this year. Atlanta’s Hector Villalba is also working to become eligible to represent Paraguay.

Osorio resigned from Mexico following the 2018 World Cup, in which El Tri were eliminated in the Round of 16 for a seventh consecutive tournament following 2-0 loss to Brazil.
