Barcelona are the clear favourites in Group B of the Champions League, but the FC crew think Tottenham could struggle to finish ahead of Inter Milan.
BARCELONA — Ernesto Valverde says a potential punishment for driving without a valid licence will not affect Gerard Pique’s performances for Barcelona.
Pique was stopped by police in the Catalan city on Friday and a routine check reportedly revealed that he was driving without any points on his licence (points are deducted in Spain from a starting base of 12 for traffic offences).
La Vanguardia say that the possible punishments for the offence vary from a €288,000 fine or 90 days of community service to a prison sentence of up to six months.
“Yes, I have spoken with Pique [about what happened],” Valverde confirmed in a news conference after Barca’s 8-2 win over Huesca on Sunday.
“I don’t think these type of situations affect him. His name’s always on everyone’s lips, sometimes without him wanting it to be. He will deal with it in the best way possible.”
A Barcelona spokesman told ESPN FC that it is a “personal issue” and that the club would make no statement on the details of Pique’s alleged misdemeanour.
Asked if they could elaborate on what had happened, Pique’s representatives said they would be making no comment at this stage of proceedings.
Four years ago, in 2014, Pique was fined €10,500 when he was charged with disturbing the peace and committing an offence against authority after he was issued with a parking ticket.
Prior to that, in 2011, the defender was caught holding his son in his arms instead of having him on a designated child-seat.
