Uefa is under pressure from Europe’s top clubs to agree to introduce video assistant referees (VAR) into the Champions League from the quarter-final stages this season.
Refereeing chiefs at the European governing body have been considering the move, but Aleksander Ceferin, Uefa’s president, is believed to be wavering and would prefer to wait until next season.
However Europe’s top clubs are keen to avoid the controversies of last season’s semi-finals and to see VARs used from the last eight onwards, following the successful use of the system at the World Cup and in the major leagues on the continent.
