Sporting Kansas City extended its clean sheet streak to four in a 2-0 win Saturday over Minnesota United.
After an evenly matched first half, coach Pete Vermes opted to substitute Felipe Guitierrez out for Yohan Croizet to open up the middle of the field. Ninety seconds into the half, Croizet broke through and scored the opening goal. Midfielder Johnny Russell received a pass from Diego Rubio and quickly turned to pass the ball off to Croizet inside the penalty box. Croizet turned and shot on goal.
Refusing to sit back, second-in-the-West Sporting, pushed into the final third again. It helps that when Diego Rubio takes a shot, he doesn’t normally miss. On his first shot of the game, Rubio added the insurance goal for Sporting.
Russell had a hand in both goals, and added a seventh and eight assist to his season total.
Also adding impressive numbers to his stats, goalkeeper Tim Melia recorded a career high 11th clean sheet this season. He made eight saves against Minnesota, who was playing without its key goalscorer Darwin Quintero.
