A pilot program led by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has scored a huge goal. The program was designed to use the blockchain for secure distribution of tickets to attend games, while working to prevent the possibility that the attendance passes could be forged or duplicated. Following the success of the pilot, UEFA is now ready to move forward and use the platform at more games across the league.
UEFA had previously run trials using the technology to distribute tickets, including a partial trial that saw 50% of all tickets to the 2018 EUFA Europa League final between Atlético de Madrid and Marseille in Lyon, France issued over the blockchain. However, the real success of the UEFA blockchain-based mobile ticketing app came out of Tallinn, Estonia this week. Atlético faced off against Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup match, with all tickets being managed through the app. That test was a huge success.
The idea behind using the blockchain was to make ticket sales “more simple and safe” while reducing the possibility that tickets could be forged or duplicated. The app works in tandem with mobile Bluetooth devices located at entry points at the stadium and ultimately allows for foot traffic to flow into the stadium in an organized, verified manner.
Following the match in Lyon, UEFA decided to make a few tweaks and improvements to the system. Once the upgrades were completed, it rolled out the full test in Tallinn and couldn’t be happier with the results.
Without a doubt we could see the technology being used for attendance at a number of activities – sporting events, music concerts, even Disneyland. The blockchain continues to show its strengths across virtually all industries and is revolutionizing how the world interacts. Every day, we move deeper into a truly digital world.
