Sporting Kansas City first-choice left back Jimmy Medranda will have season-ending surgery to repair a cartilage defect in his left knee, The Kansas City Star reported Tuesday.
The 24-year-old Colombian has been limited to 12 league appearances, including eight starts, in part because of bruising in the joint. He last appeared in a match on May 20.
Exploratory surgery to determine why Medranda wasn’t recovering uncovered the defect and the need for an additional procedure. The surgery will also force him to miss time at the start of the 2019 season.
Without Medranda, veteran Seth Sinovic and Homegrown Player signing Jaylin Lindsey have been playing on the left side of Kansas City’s backline.
