Diego Costa’s first-minute goal for Atletico Madrid against Real Madrid in Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup was the fastest ever in a European club final.
The Spanish international gave the defending Europa League titleholders the lead just 49 seconds into the match at A. Le Coq Arena in Tallinn, Estonia.
Costa wrestled past Real defenders Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane and powered a high-angle shot past goalkeeper Keylor Navas to hit the top of the net.
Real came back to score two goals on a Karim Benzema strike and a Ramos penalty, but Costa added another goal in the 79th minute to level the match.
The fastest goal in a Champions League final was scored by AC Milan’s Paolo Maldini in 2005 with 53 seconds in that match. Michael Rummenigge netted the fastest goal in a Europa League (then UEFA Cup) final for Borussia Dortmund at the two-minute mark in 1993.
