Nick Pope, who travelled to the World Cup as Southgate’s third-choice goalkeeper, is out with a dislocated shoulder – the same injury Tom Heaton missed most of last season with.
Heaton is now out with a calf injury and Burnley have signed Joe Hart, who Southgate dropped for the World Cup.
Southgate is unlikely to turn back to 31-year-old Hart, even though he started Burnley’s draw against Southampton, who have two English goalkeepers of their own.
Alex McCarthy, who won an England call-up under Sam Allardyce, is under consideration, while 22-year-old Angus Gunn is also on Southgate’s radar.
Gunn joined Southampton for £13.5million from Manchester City during the summer, but it was McCarthy who started against Burnley.
