Montreal Impact acquire midfielder Micheal Azira from Colorado Rapids

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Trade

The Montreal Impact have acquired Uganda international midfielder Micheal Azira from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft, the club announced Wednesday.

Azira holds his American green card and will not count as an international player on the Impact’s roster.

The 30-year-old Azira has played five seasons in MLS between the Seattle Sounders and Colorado, appearing in 91 league games, including 73 starts. He made at least 30 starts in 2016 and 2017, but has been rarely used this season by first-year Rapids coach Anthony Hudson.

“Micheal is a player who has quite a bit of experience within MLS as well as on the international level,” Impact technical director Adam Braz said in a statement. “He is a defensive central midfielder who will provide us with depth in an important position. We look forward to Micheal joining up with the team next week.”

At the international level, Azira has played four games with the Uganda national team, making his senior debut in November of 2016 and playing twice in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
