Liverpool have triggered the release clause in Xherdan Shaqiri’s contract and he is undergoing a medical ahead of a £13 million move to Anfield, sources have told ESPN FC.

Shaqiri started his medical at Liverpool on Friday morning after an agreement was reached with Stoke on Thursday, with discussions having started earlier this week.

If the transfer is completed, the 26-year-old would become Liverpool’s third signing of the summer after Naby Keita and Fabinho joined the club, and would strengthen Jurgen Klopp’s options in the final third of the pitch.

He would likely make his first appearance for Liverpool on the club’s preseason tour of the United States, where they will face Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Manchester United in the International Champions Cup.

Shaqiri helped Switzerland reach the round-of-16 of the World Cup, with Stoke hoping those performances in Russia would spark an auction for the forward.

Sources told ESPN FC that Shaqiri had his heart set on move to Liverpool, for whom he had been a target since 2014.

He scored 15 times in 92 appearances for Stoke following his move from Inter Milan in 2015.
