Schupbach to Play in UEFA Women’s Champions League

Bowling Green State University women’s soccer standout Madison Schupbach will head overseas to continue her career. Schupbach is heading to Wales later this week to join Cardiff Met Ladies Football Club.

Cardiff Met LFC captured the Welsh Premier League championship in April, and the club will now represent Welsh soccer on the European stage. The title means that Cardiff Met LFC has secured qualification to the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

“I’m am so excited to have the opportunity to continue my soccer career in Wales with Cardiff Met LFC for the following year,” said Schupbach. “I have been so fortunate the past four years to play for BGSU, where I have been able to not only expand my knowledge of the game, but develop skills that have taken me to the next level. It has always been a dream of mine since I was little to play professional soccer and now that this opportunity has come, I am excited for my journey to begin!”

Schupbach wrapped up a stellar four-year career with the Falcons last fall, helping the Orange and Brown to a 13-7-1 overall record and a trip to the championship match of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. Schupbach was an All-MAC First-Team selection in her senior campaign, and also was named to the OCSA All-Ohio Second Team along with the Academic All-MAC Team.

“Maddy has been pivotal to the change in culture, drive and quality this program has seen since she arrived here,” said BGSU head coach Matt Fannon. “She joined a team that won zero games the year before, and the steady increase in wins alone show you what a difference she has made. She is the epitome of what you would expect of a professional; dedicated, driven, passionate and smart, and has qualities to her game that are not often seen, including a belter of a left foot. On top of this she is a wonderful person, is a favorite of everyone on the team and has become a good friend to me and everyone on our staff. We are so incredibly proud of her achievements while here and in her near future, and cannot wait to see her playing Champions League football in Europe.”

Schupbach started all 21 of BGSU’s matches last fall, with 16 points on four goals and eight assists. She was third on the Falcons and tied for ninth in the MAC in points in 2017, and was second in the entire league in assists, trailing only teammate Maureen Kennedy. In MAC matches only, Schupbach tied for the league lead with five assists.

She was at her best down the stretch, scoring 12 of her 16 points in the month of October. The Falcons were 6-1-1 in matches in which Schupbach scored at least one point last fall.

In her career, Schupbach played in 77 contests as a Falcon, starting 73 of those matches. She had 34 career points on 10 goals and 14 assists.

Schupbach has played for Detroit Sun FC of United Women’s Soccer during the past two summers. In 2017, she tied for third in the entire league in scoring, with 22 points in just seven matches. Schupbach had nine goals and four assists to lead the team and rank among the UWS leaders in both categories, as the Sun finished second in the Midwest Conference with a record of 6-1-3. Schupbach was involved in the scoring of 13 of the team’s 23 regular-season goals. She was an All-Midwest Conference First-Team honoree and an All-UWS Second-Team selection.
