Portuguese midfielder Marcos Paulo Mesquita “Rony” Lopes was a revelation for Monaco last season.
Lopes signed for Monaco from Manchester City in a £9 million deal in the summer of 2015. However, he spent the following two years of his career on loan with Lille, and thus, he was not a part of the title-winning Monaco side of 2016-17. Monaco’s unexpected success in Ligue 1 and Champions League led to the mass exodus of star players in the following summer. However, multiple departures provided Lopes with a shot at the first team at Monaco, and he took it with both hands last season.
After losing stars like Kylian Mbappe, Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva and Tiemoue Bakayoko in a single transfer window, Monaco were expected to struggle last season. However, they managed to hold their own throughout the season and finished in the second spot, ahead of Lyon and Marseille.
