Liverpool fined by UEFA over Man City bus attack

Liverpool have been fined €20,000 for incidents around the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final with Manchester City.

City’s team coach was subject to a volley of objects thrown at it as it made its way to Anfield in a route publicised by Merseyside Police ahead of the game, with the damage so severe a replacement bus had to take Pep Guardiola and his players home.

Liverpool, who quickly apologised as a club and through manager Jurgen Klopp before the game took place, were charged collectively for the evening by UEFA with the throwing of objects, acts of damage, crowd disturbances, and the setting off of fireworks.

After a hearing on Thursday, the Merseyside club have been handed a fine of just €20,000, as well as €6,000 for setting off fireworks and throwing objects in the return leg.

In 2017, City were fined €18,000 after they were found guilty of charges relating to a pitch invasion, the throwing of objects and a delayed kick-off during their last-16 game with Monaco at the Etihad.

Merseyside Police said recently that their investigation into the attack is ongoing, and that no arrests have been made – they also made a plea for video footage to add to their officers’ bodycam footage and CCTV coverage, but as yet have released no images of people to whom they wish to speak.
