Ronaldo threw his own future into doubt after Saturday’s Champions League final victory over Liverpool in Kiev by speaking in the past tense about the club, although sources have told ESPN FC he has yet to make a decision on whether he will sign a new contract or move to a new club.
Casillas said in AS that his former teammate is a symbol of Madrid and should stay as he could not be replaced by any other player.
“Even with all the things that have been said [Ronaldo] has always stayed,” Casillas said. “The same as Alfredo Di Stefano was a symbol of that Madrid, now Cristiano is on a level with Di Stefano.
“I know him and he is very competitive. I would not change him for anybody, not even Neymar. For me Cristiano is Real Madrid.”
Speculation has continued that Madrid president Florentino Perez has targeted Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar as a big galactico summer signing, with talk of a summer shake up at the Bernabeu intensifying after coach Zinedine Zidane surprisingly stepped down on Thursday.
