Pablo Machin has left Girona to take over as head coach at Sevilla, the Spanish club announced on Monday.
Sevilla, who went through three managers — Eduardo Berizzo, Vincenzo Montella and Joaquin Caparros — on their way to finishing a disappointing seventh, appointed Machin on a two-year contract.
“Machin has made his stamp on the game and now he can use the weapons of a team heading into Europe and which wants to compete at the highest level,” a statement published on Sevilla’s website said.
Under Machin, Girona were one of the success stories of the recently concluded La Liga season as the 43-year-old boss led his promoted Catalan side to a 10th-placed finish in the top flight.
He was under contract for next season and Girona said the coach activated an exit clause after turning down their offer of a longer deal.
Caparros, who coached Sevilla in the early 2000s, last week was announced as the team’s director of football.
