Tottenham sign Mauricio Pochettino and staff to new five-year contracts

ESPN’s Tottenham correspondent Dan Kilpatirck shares his thoughts on a season where Mauricio Pochettino secured Champions League football during their spell at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino and his backroom staff have signed new five-year contracts with Tottenham until 2023, the Premier League club announced on Thursday.

The deal comes less than 10 days after Pochettino came close to issuing an ultimatum to Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy by calling for the club to dramatically change strategies.

Pochettino, who has led Spurs to three successive top-three finishes in the Premier League, called on the club to “create a different idea” and said it needed to be “brave and take risks” in order to challenge for the top honours next season.

But in a statement announcing his new deal, Pochettino revealed he and Levy were seeing eye-to-eye.

“Daniel and I have spoken at length about our aspirations for this football club,” the Argentine said. “We both share the same philosophies to achieve long-term, sustainable success.

“This is a special club — we always strive to be creative in the way we work both on and off the pitch and will continue to stick to our principles in order to achieve the success this club deserves.”

Assistants Jesus Perez, Miguel D’Agostino and Toni Jimenez also signed new deals to stay under Pochettino, who has managed Spurs since 2014.
