Chicago Fire 2, Houston Dynamo 3 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

Alberth Elis scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season in the second half to lift Houston to a 3-2, come-from-behind victory over the depleted Chicago Fire at Toyota Park on Sunday afternoon.

Romell Quioto also scored early for the Dynamo, who secured their first away win despite seeing their lead turn into a deficit when Nemanja Nikolic scored and then assisted Diego Campos in a two-minute stretch of the first half.

Elis equalized from the penalty spot 11 minutes after the break, converting a chance earned when Mauro Manotas beat Fire goalkeeper Richard Sanchez to the ball in the area.

Then Elis put the Dynamo in front on a breakaway created by the service of fellow Honduran Boniek Garcia. That was enough to ensure victory against a Fire side that added Dax McCarty to their significant roster of injured and unavailable players this week.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: At 2-4-1, the Fire now have the worst home record in the Eastern Conference in terms of points per match (1.00). Meanwhile, the Dynamo have been one of MLS’ more respectable away sides in 2018, playing to a 1-1-3 mark so far after their well-publicized road struggles of last year.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Campos’ first professional goal was worthy of winning any match, aesthetically speaking. Chances are the second-round 2018 MLS SuperDraft pick will remember it for years to come, even if it gets lost in the shuffle of the day.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: After a relatively quiet first half, Elis livened in the second half. In addition to his brace, the 22-year-old also struck the right post with another attempt induced Sanchez into another late challenge beyond the penalty area after the Dynamo had regained the lead.
