Rumor: Belgium’s Club Brugge interested in Toronto FC GK Alex Bono

Alex Bono helped lead Toronto FC to a treble in MLS last season, and his efforts appear to have not gone unnoticed abroad.

Belgian website Voetbal Nieuws reported on Tuesday that Club Brugge are clearing out their goalkeeper corps in the upcoming offseason, and are looking at Bono as a possible new No. 1 at the club.

Bono, 24, was drafted No. 6 overall by TFC in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. Taking over as the starting ‘keeper during the 2016 season, he’s racked up 49 starts in MLS regular season play in his career to date, as well as five MLS Cup Playoffs starts en route to the 2017 MLS Cup title.

Brugge currently sit atop the Belgian First Division A standings. They have been among the best Belgian clubs in recent seasons and routinely play in the Champions League or Europa League. They currently have an American goalkeeper on the books in Ethan Horvath.

The Voetbal Nieuws report indicated Brugge were interested in Bono in particular based on his play in the Concacaf Champions League this spring, and also that other Belgian clubs are eyeing the New York native.
