Real Madrid salvaged a 1-1 home draw against Athletic Bilbao thanks to a late Cristiano Ronaldo strike on Wednesday night.
The Portugal forward cancelled out Inaki Williams’ early goal to save Los Blancos from another league loss in what has been a thoroughly disappointing defence of their 2017 title.
Williams opened the scoring for the visitors in the 14th minute, when the Bilbao striker collected an Inigo Cordoba through ball before wonderfully chipping a stranded Keylor Navas in the Real Madrid goal.
But Ronaldo answered just three minutes from time, when he deftly redirected a Luka Modric long-range effort to beat a helpless Kepa Arrizabalaga in the Bilbao net.
The draw gives Real 68 points from 33 matches, placing them three points behind second-placed Atletico Madrid, while Bilbao move into a tie with Real Sociedad for 12th.
