Lionel Messi scored a spectacular hat trick as Barcelona saw off Leganes 3-1 at the Camp Nou on Saturday night.
The win means it’s 38 games unbeaten in La Liga for Ernesto Valverde’s team, equalling the record set by Real Sociedad in 1979-80.
Messi had the hosts up 2-0 at the break, scoring twice in the span of five minutes either side of the half-hour mark, converting a free kick from outside the area before turning a Philippe Coutinho assist goalward on 32 minutes.
Leganes did not go down easy, though, fashioning several chances in the second half before finding their first when Nabil El Zhar’s 69th-minute shot took a slight deflection and found its way into the back of the net.
But Messi would seal the points just before full-time, popping up at the right place at the right time to settle and side-foot in his third, going level with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah on goals in the race for the European Golden Shoe.
