It was a tale of two forwards in France’s top flight this week as one squandered the chance to be a hero while the other enjoyed his best night yet
Memphis Depay enjoyed his best game since moving to France on Sunday. The Netherlands international attacker produced an incredible display at Metz’s Stade Saint-Symphorien, as he scored a goal and assisted four more in a 5-0 win.
Combined with Marseille’s 0-0 draw at home with Montpellier, it was an excellent weekend for Lyon as they moved up into the third and final Champions League qualifying spot in Ligue 1 with just six rounds of matches remaining.
Memphis has been at the forefront of their charge and took to Instagram after the encounter to celebrate.
“5 goals, 3 points, job done! All glory to God,” he wrote.
Could the inspiration behind his performance have been revealed 24 hours beforehand on social media?
“The picture my mom sends me today means everything,” he said, displaying a picture of a butterfly in his mother’s hands. “I’m so grateful the way God is showing me things in life.”
Earlier in the week, he revealed another one of the secrets of his revival – simply being content with himself.
“Good morning, are you happy with the person in the mirror? I found out happiness starts there,” he said.
One man who had a little less luck in front of goal this weekend was Edinson Cavani.
The PSG striker wasn’t in the starting XI for Friday’s fixture against Saint-Etienne but was given the chance to be the hero off the bench. However, he served up a contender for miss of the season when he sent a simple chance wide after being set up by Angel Di Maria.
“Mamita Edi! Anyway, this is what keeps us alive and we must get better every day…” he said on his Instagram page, fronting up to the miss by posting this under the video of the chance.
Neymar is expected back in Paris in the weeks ahead but is continuing his recovery from a broken foot sustained against Marseille.
The attacker is taking things easy back in Brazil at present and has given his followers a glimpse of how he is spending his time.
“I love poker,” he said, with a picture of himself looking stern-faced with a healthy pile of chips at the table.
Additionally, he has posted another picture of his new hair, notably showing his ‘Blessed’ tattoo underneath.
It is likely to be several more weeks before Neymar is back in competitive action, but his PSG team-mates can secure the Ligue 1 title next weekend if they can beat Monaco at Parc des Princes.
