Fast starts propelled three of tonight’s home teams to first-leg victories in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals, with Atlético Madrid particularly quick off the mark through Koke’s goal after just 22 seconds.
Europa League quarter-final first legs
Arsenal 4-1 CSKA Moskva
Atlético 2-0 Sporting CP
Lazio 4-2 Salzburg
Leipzig 1-0 Marseile
Lazio (8 minutes) and Arsenal (9) also took early strides towards crucial leads, albeit by half-time in Rome the Italians had been pegged back. Two goals in three second-half minutes, from Felipe Anderson and Ciro Immobile, eventually cost Salzburg their 35-game unbeaten run. Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette both struck twice in London.
In contrast to the other three matches, Leipzig’s breakthrough against Marseille came at the end of the first half, through Timo Werner’s fourth goal of this #UEL spring campaign.
The second legs take place next Thursday, 12 April.
