GERMAN surprise package RB Leipzig could be banned from next season’s Champions League, according to reports.
The Bundesliga minnows are owned by drinks manufacturer Red Bull and have enjoyed an fairytale debut in the top flight this season.
Leipzig currently sit second in the table, five points behind Bayern Munich and eight ahead of Borussia Dortmund, but fans of other clubs aren’t happy with their corporate links.
However, those opposed may have something to smile about soon though, as Uefa will only allow ONE team owned by the same company to participate in either the Champions OR Europa League.
Leipzig have a sister team in the form of Austrian giants RB Salzburg, who are regulars in European competition.
And with both sides looking likely to book a place in the Champions League via their respective league positions, Salzburger Nachrichten claims one will be forced to miss out.
A Uefa spokesman said: “This will be verified by Uefa once we have received the competition entry forms from the national football associations after the end of the season in the respective leagues.”
But Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff is confident that both Red Bulls teams will be unaffected in the new campaign.
He added: “We are not nervous at RB Leipzig and also the Uefa signals don’t exit. If we qualify there is no reason why we should doubt to play in Europe next season.”
