TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Reports
Update, February 17: Athletic Bilbao announced on their website on Friday that they have terminated Aketxe’s contract so he can sign in MLS.
Toronto FC hit paydirt last year with the savvy pickup of Victor Vazquez. Could they be aiming for another high-impact signing from Spain this offseason?
That’s the report from multiple sources on both sides of the Atlantic, with The Athletic’s Joshua Kloke reporting on Wednesday that TFC are in talks with Athletic Bilbao about midfielder Ager Aketxe.

Aketxe, 24, came through the ranks of the vaunted youth set-up at Athletic, making his first team debut in 2013. The Bilbao native has 14 appearances with the La Liga outfit, and spent half of last season on loan at second-division Cadiz.
If he joined Toronto, the attacking midfielder would likely be a replacement for Benoit Cheyrou, who retired in the offseason. Toronto FC begin CONCACAF Champions League play on Tuesday against the Colorado Rapids.
