Sporting Kansas City have two wins in two preseason games under their belt, and will look to keep rolling as they face a squad of FC Tucson trialists on Wednesday morning in Arizona. With the 2019 Concacaf Champions League series against Toluca rapidly approaching, Sporting will look to get fit — and keep fit — against the local side.
Sporting Kansas City
Sporting have used a mix of first-team, Swope Park Rangers and academy players in preseason. While that’s likely set to continue against Tucson, the preparations for CCL are well underway, with one newcomer to the team with experience in the competition learning the ropes before the first game arrives.
“We’ve got Champions League coming up, February 21, so we’ve got to get together on that,” said Sporting forward Erik Hurtado. “We’ve been working on a lot of tactics together as a team, how we press, how we move, and what we do when we win the ball.”
FC Tucson
FC Tucson are embarking on their first season as a fully professional team, joining as one of the founding members of USL League One for 2019. The club, founded in 2010 and playing in what is now called USL League Two (née PDL) from 2012, they have been a frequent preseason foe for MLS teams, with camps and tournaments run annually through the club and their USL Championship affiliate, Phoenix Rising FC.
The team will be coached in 2019 by former MLS player Darren Sawatsky and so far, two signings for the upcoming season have been announced: rookie Moshe Perez and former RGVFC player Guillermo Delgado. Wednesday’s friendly will feature trialists looking to make the grade for Tucson and earn a spot on the roster.
