Paris Saint-Germain lost their first domestic game since May 2018 after being stunned by Guingamp at the Parc des Princes in the Coupe de la Ligue quarter-finals on Wednesday night.
It was expected to be a routine victory for Ligue 1’s top side – priced at 3/50 (1.06) with William Hill pre-match – as they took on the league’s basement-dwellers, but a 93rd-minute penalty from Marcus Thuram meant Guingamp defied their 28/1 (29.0) odds.
That defeat ends the Parisians’ remarkable spell of dominance in the Coupe de la Ligue. Having won the trophy in each of the last five seasons, PSG were on a 21-match winning streak in the competition.
The last time PSG lost a Coupe de la Ligue game was back in November 2012 when they fell to Saint-Etienne on penalties after a 0-0 draw in normal time.
The winning spot kick that day was scored by one Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who ended that season with 21 goals and earned himself a transfer to Borussia Dortmund at the end of it.
Since the last time PSG lost in the Coupe de la Ligue, therefore, Aubameyang has scored 180 times at club level, won the Bundesliga Golden Boot and moved to Arsenal for a reported £56 million.
Meanwhile, Lyon’s cup dream came to an abrupt end on Tuesday night as they failed to justify 11/25 (1.44) odds with a 2-1 home defeat to 6/1 (7.0) Strasbourg, thanks to Lamine Kone’s second-half winner.
Struggling Monaco – who sit 19th in Ligue 1 – are into the semi-finals of the tournament after upsetting Rennes on penalties. Thierry Henry’s men were Evens (2.0) to qualify, with Rennes priced at 4/5 (1.80).
In fact, the only team not to suffer an upset in the last eight were 17/20 (1.85) Bordeaux, who needed a 70th-minute strike from Samuel Kalu to see off Ligue 2 Le Havre.
